Ear Infections
Ear infections (otitis externa) can be caused by allergies, foreign bodies and parasites. Factors that may predispose your dog to infection include size and shape of the ear, environmental temperature and humidity, and pet lifestyle (particularly swimming). The skin of the ear may be very red and thicker than normal, and there is most likely a discharge that may be yellow or dark brown. Your dog may shake and scratch his/her head causing further trauma to the ear, and may appear to be in pain when you try to examine the ear. In many cases, there will be a strong, unpleasant odour.
