Mange Mites

Mange is a disease caused by mites that invade the surface of the skin and outer ear. Mites are very small and this is why they are not visible to the naked eye. The disease is contracted through direct contact with an infected animal while playing in the park for example, as mites can easily pass from one animal to another.

Sarcoptes mites prefer areas of the animal with less hair: the edges of the ears, elbows, abdomen and knees for example. The symptoms begin with intense itching which leads to continuous scratching.

Demodex mange usually begins on the limbs and face (around the eyes and mouth). In dogs it often quickly spreads all over the body. Demodex mange may appear at any age and it develops whenever there is a drop in the defences.
